The 23rd Annual
Southwest Virginia Performance Tested Bull Sale sponsored by Virginia Beef
Cattle Improvement Association was held Saturday, March 23 at Wytheville.
One hundred forty eight bulls representing the top two-thirds of the
bulls evaluated sold for an average price of $1585.
Breed averages were as follows: 87
Angus averaged $1645, 30 Simmental averaged $1623, 19 Charolais at $1321, 9
Gelbvieh at $1644, and 3 Red Angus sold for $950.
The 42 fall-born Senior bulls averaged $1805, and the 106 spring-born
Junior bulls sold for an average price of $1498.
The top selling bull was a Gelbvieh,

610, consigned by
Little Windy Hill Farms of Max Meadows, VA.
This homozygous black, February, 2000 son of JBOB Carolina Classic 1388G
sold to Donald Medley of
Sugar Grove, VA
for $5100.
He had a test gain of 3.53, ratio 110, and an adjusted yearling weight of
1181, ratio 108. His EPD for calving
ease was 110, birth weight –0.6, weaning weight +34, milk +18, and yearling
weight +66.
The Simmental sale was paced by
Lot
409 -- a homozygous black, polled son of Black Irish Kansas
consigned by Reasor Simmentals of Rural Retreat, VA.
This October, 2000 Senior bull sold to Morlunda Farms of Lewisburg, WV
for $4000. The bull had EPDs of +9
calving ease, +0 birth weight, +35 weaning weight, +4 milk, and +64 yearling
weight along with a 1250 pound adjusted yearling weight and test gain of 4.24.
Reasor Simmentals also consigned the high-indexing Senior Simmental bull,
Lot
408, which also sold to Morlunda Farms for $2900.
This bull was an October, 2000 son of Black Mick and posted a. test gain
of 5.36, ratio 140, and adjusted yearling weight of 1439, ratio 117.
Green Acres Angus Farm of
Rocky Mount, VA
consigned the
top-selling Angus bull,
Lot
141, a January, 2001 son of Connealy Freightliner which sold
to Huckleberry Beef of Floyd, VA for $3100.
This bull had a test gain of 3.72, an adjusted yearling weight of 11266,
and EPDs for birth weight of +1.1, weaning weight +37, milk +21, and yearling
weight +75. The high-indexing Senior
Angus bull,

sold for $2800 to

.
This son of Krugerrand of Donamere 490 had a test gain of 4.29, ratio
116, and an adjusted yearling weight of 122, ratio 109.

also sold for $2800
and went to Janet Gayle Harris of King George, VA.
This calving-ease son of Connealy Dateling had EPDs of birth weight +0.8,
weaning weight +40, milk +19, and yearling weight +76, along with ratios of 109
for yearling weight and 106 for test gain. Green Acres Angus Farm sold

26 to Malcolm Boothe
of
Pulaski, VA.
This November, 2000 son of Connealy Freightliner brought $2600.
The top selling Charolais bull,

322, was consigned by
Virginia Tech and sold to Tommy Jack Shoun of
Mountain City, TN
for $2900.
This February son of WCR Prime Cut 764 had EPDs of –1.6 birth weight,
+29 weaning weight, +27 milk, and +58 yearling weight along with a 4.10 test
gain, ratio 129, and adjusted yearling weight of 1219.
Dennis Gambill of
Sparta, NC
purchased the Senior
Red Angus bull,
Lot
701, consigned by KC Farms of Ferrum, VA for $1250.
All bulls in the test and sale were consigned by members of the Virginia Beef
Cattle Improvement Association. Bulls
were developed at the Southwest Bull Test Station owned and operated by Eric D.
Umberger.
