The
44th Annual Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association Culpeper Junior Bull
Sale was held
Friday, April 5, 2002
at Culpeper Agricultural Enterprises
in
Culpeper,
Virginia. Sixty bulls representing the sixty percent of the 100 bulls
evaluated grossed $112,550 for an average price of $1876.
Breed averages were as follows: 53
Angus at $1976, 5 Charolais at $1060, and 2
Hereford
at $1250.
The Central Virginia Cattleman’s Association sold 63 fall-calving bred
heifers immediately following the bulls. The
heifer sale grossed $63,015 to average $1000.
The
top selling bull in the sale was an Angus,
Lot
185, consigned by Green Acres Angus
Farm in
Rocky Mount, Virginia.
Two-thirds interest and full possession of the March, 2001 son of Connealy
Freightliner sold to Barksdale Farms of Rocky Mount, Virginia for $3700.
The high-indexing bull had a test gain of 4.37, ratio 107, and an
impressive adjusted yearling weight of 1513, ratio 123.
His expected progeny difference for birth weight was +3.9, weaning +54,
milk +27, and yearling weight +77. Soldiers'
Hill Angus Farm of Warrenton, Virginia sold a son of B/R New Design 036, Lot
127, which went to Mick Coles in Huron, Ohio for $3400.
He had a test gain of 4.54 and adjusted yearling weight of 1375, both
ratios of 111. He had EPDs of birth
weight +2.0, weaning weight +35, milk +26, and yearling weight of +70; coupled
with a 16.2 adj. REA, REA EPD of +.53 and RP EPD of +.41.
Quaker Hill Farm of Louisa, Virginia sold a son of B/R Grand Design 849,
Lot 146, which went to Ray Simms in Fredericksburg, Virginia for $3000.
He had a test gain of 4.87, ratio 119, and adjusted yearling weight of
1314. He had EPDs of birth weight
+1.2, weaning weight +40, milk +21, and yearling weight of +69.
Another Soldiers' Hill Angus Farm consignment, Lot 126, sold to
Epsewassen Farm in Stanardsville, Virginia for $3000.
This high marbling son of B/R New Design 036, had a test gain of 4.24 and
adjusted yearling weight of 1362 to ratio 110.
Green Acres Angus Farm sold another son of Connealy Freightliner, Lot
184, to El Rancho Grande Farm of Castleton, Virginia for $3000.
The high selling Hereford bull was Lot 221 consigned by Don Richardson of
Crozet, Virginia and sold to Samuel Hunter of Hagerstown, Maryland at $1300.
This polled son of EF 821C Mr. Carcass G824 had an adjusted REA of 14.4,
test average daily gain of 2.77 and adjusted yearling weight 1127.
Members of the Central Virginia Cattleman’s Association sold 63
fall-calving bred heifers immediately following the bulls.
All of the heifers were distinguished as Virginia Premium Assured
Heifers. All heifers were sold
guaranteed pregnant by AI to Rito 6I6 of 4B20 6807, or confirmed to natural
service by sons of Rito 6I6. Due
dates and fetal sexes were supplied on all heifers.
The high-selling lot of heifers was consigned by Glenmary Farm of Rapidan,
Virginia and sold to Hickory Farm in Rhoadsville, Virginia for $1150 each.
These three heifers were Angus x Simmental and due to calve in early
September to Rito 6I6 of 4B20 6807. Riverview
Farm of Louisa, Virginia sold four Angus-cross heifers to Sunshine Farm of
Providence Forge, Virginia for $1100 each.
All bulls in the test and sale were consigned by members of the Virginia Beef
Cattle Improvement Association. Both
the bulls and heifers were developed at Glenmary Farm near Rapidan, Virginia.
Sale manager was VA Sale Services in Staunton and the auctioneer was Dale
Stith.
